PROJECT BACKGROUND

A MINDFUL EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYDAY WELLNESS

Blossun (blossom + sun) is an app and a movement to help busy individuals remember to prioritize health and wellness in their daily lives.

For my design hackathon project I wanted to explore how design and technology could encourage busy individuals to prioritize their health and wellness. In today’s fast-paced world, packed schedules and digital distractions often push self-care to the sidelines, leaving people feeling drained and disconnected. Blossun (blossom + sun) is an app and movement that encourages mindfulness through real-time sunset notifications, journaling features, and social sharing.

THE PROBLEM
Busy individuals fail to make time for health and wellness. Since COVID and beyond, social media consumption has surged substantially. Subsequently, mental health in young adults has plummeted.
OBSERVATION

THE EFFECT OF COVID

I spend way too much time on my phone.

Even when I say I’m “too busy”.

  • Social media use increased by 20% by March 2020

  • Rates of depression skyrocketed

RESEARCH QUESITONS

How might we combat digital fatigue and encourage users to take meaningful breaks from technology?

How might we encourage users to engage with natural moments like sunrise/sunset as daily rituals for mindfulness?

How might we use visual design to evoke calmness and create an emotionally grounded user experience?

TARGET AUDIENCE

College students and busy individuals who want to prioritize health and wellness in their daily lives.

DESIGN PROCESS

IDEATION PHASE

This initial ideation phase was very challenging, yet also rewarding. I enjoyed the freedom of sketching and brainstorming whatever ideas came to mind, but I struggled with thinking of an idea that didn’t already exist. I knew from the jump that I wanted to focus on a mobile app as my main deliverable, so many of my index cards focused on that medium.

I often start with too many ideas, but Phase 2 helped me narrow my focus. I chose to create a mobile app, brand identity, and project installation. I felt as if these deliverables tied nicely together and related to both physical and digital mediums.

MOOD BOARD

VISUAL LANGUAGE OF WELL-BEING

how design could play a role in emotional wellness—starting with tone, mood, and imagery.

BRAND GUIDELINES

I settled on Blossun (blossom + sun) as the brand name, and centered the rest of the visual choices around it. The colors are a combination of earthiness and the spectrum of colors that sunsets/sunrises hold, which are also reflected in the colors and shapes of the visual assets.

FUTURE SCOPE

LOOKING FORWARD

Blossun is more than an app, it’s a brand and a movement. I aimed to extend the experience across physical and digital touchpoints to foster a sense of community. Looking ahead, Blossun could evolve through features like digital postcards, location-based meetups, and a global network of shared sunsets.
